Tigers see it as vote for peace

The LTTE yesterday said the outcome of the March 30 local council elections clearly showed that the people had rejected the extremist policies of the JVP and the JHU and the people had supported the progress on the peace front.

LTTE political head S.P. Thamilselvan, speaking at a news conference said in his view the Sinhala people had given a mandate to President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the long standing Tamil problem through negotiations.

"These extremist elements have been thrown out of the window. President Rajapaksa must now firmly state his stand on the peace process, change some of his policies and resolve the Tamil issue with determination", he said.

Mr. Thamilselvan said the President does not have an excuse to deviate from the peace front as the people had spoken through the polls and had bestowed upon him the responsibility to resolve the issues faced by the Tamils and take the peace process forward.

"The President should not waver. Instead he must fully implement the ceasefire agreement and create the atmosphere that is required to take the peace process forward", he said. -Daily Mirror-
