Jayalalithaa speaks out for Sri Lanka’s Tamils

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jeyaram has insisted that the rights of Tamils in Sri Lanka should be secured and urged the government of Sri Lanka to ensure a conducive environment where the Tamils could live with respect and dignity.

Addressing a news conference in Tamil Nadu, Ms. Jeyaram said there was no change in her stand which calls for safeguarding the rights of the Tamils in the country.

"Ealam is a goal and a dream of some people. It is these people that some term as Ealam Tamils. But as far as I am concerned they are all Sri Lankan Tamils and the Sri Lankan government should ensure their rights are secured," she said.

As Sri Lanka’s big brother India is keeping a close watch on the violence that has erupted in the island and the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was updated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa last week on the incidents including the violence in Trincomalee.

The Norwegian peace facilitators were also in constant contact with India updating it on the developments with regard to Sri Lanka’s peace process.-Daily Mirror-By Easwaran Rutnam
