THE MUSLIM COUNCIL OF SRI LANKA CONDEMNS THE BRUTAL KILLINGS AND CALLS UPON THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO ACT IMMEDIATELY

PRESS RELEASE

The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka, which is a network of over 75 of the largest and most influential National organizations of Muslims in Sri Lanka vehemently condemns in the strongest terms the savage and brutal attack on the bus carrying civilians to Kebithigollewa which killing over 65 innocent poor unarmed civilians including many children and fatally injuring more than 75 others.

This barbaric and brutal attack by claymore mine carries the message and hallmark of terrorism and there is no iota of doubt amongst the people as to who are the perpertors of the attack and is a blatant violation of the cease-fire agreement. We commend the restraint and calm displayed by the people in face of this brutality which has defeated the objective of those inhuman forces who perpetrated the attack and the MCSL calls upon the GOSL to take steps to provide the innocent citizens across the country the security which is it’s constitutional duty and responsibility.

The MCSL believes the right to dissent is the driving force of a successful democracy and thus democracy and pluralism should be the only way to establish a durable and lasting peace in Sri Lanka, where people of all communities can live as equals.

Thus, we believe that, there is no short cut to achieve peace, but through meaningful dialogue which the GOSL has steadfastly committed itself to and the MCSL calls upon the LTTE to immediately return to the negotiating table to arrive at a mutually acceptable formula which would establish peace and bring prosperity to the people.

The MCSL believes that the international community and specially the countries who are Co chairs of the Sri Lanka Peace process have an obligation and responsibility today than ever before to bring together the GOSL and the LTTE immediately to take action to avoid an escalation that could have tragic conscquences.

The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka expresses its deepest sorrow and conveys its condolences to the families of the victims of the brutal massacre and wish speedy recovery for those who have been injured.
