Journalist shot dead in Colombo

Police Sunday morning found the body of Sampath Lakmal Silva, a free lance writer to several Sinhala newspapers.

The body was found at Jayawardena Place in the Dehiwela police area. He is believed to have been abducted, brought to the scene of his execution and shot, police said.

The victim contributed to Irudina, Lakbima, Sathdina, TNL and is believed to have worked for a minister holding a non-Cabinet rank.

Police said that there was no evidence to link the LTTE with the killing. The military dismissed pro-LTTE TamilNet report that tried to blame the intelligence services.

In a report posted on Sunday morning, the TamilNet said, "Lakmal Sampath was a popular columnist who revealed details about the Sri Lankan Military Intelligence, corruption at various levels of the Sri Lankan defence establishment, and underworld activities in Colombo." by Dharmasena Welipitiya Divaina corr
