Arnold, Kulasekara in World Cup squad

by Rex Clementine

Sri Lanka’s cricket selectors on Sunday picked middle order batsman Russel Arnold and medium paceman Nuwan Kulasekara in their 15 member squad for the upcoming Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean ending weeks of speculation on the formation of the team.

The selectors had a fair idea about the basic combination of the World Cup squad and they just had to decide on two middle order slots and on a seam bowler and after lengthy discussion on Sunday decided to stick with Arnold, Chamara Silva and Nuwan Kulasekara, a cricket board official told ‘The Island’ .

The source also said that Arnold, who only made seven runs in the Rajkot ODI on Sunday, was lucky to get selected for his second World Cup.

The selectors have named eight batsmen, two specialist spinners and five seam bowlers in the 15 man squad and will submit the squad to the ICC this evening.

Monday was the cut off day for submission of squads to the ICC.

In the last few months, there have been questions about Arnold’s ability to perform at the top level after several disappointing outings for the national team in the shorter version of the game. But eventually, his good performance for Sri Lanka ‘A’ in the West Indies last year along with his experience seems to have stood in good stead for the NCC player.

All-rounder Gayan Wijekoon came close for selection for the Caribbean, but eventually the selectors decided against his inclusion arguing that he didn’t fit into the combination that they were seeking for the World Cup, the source said. via … The Island
