UNP will topple govt. at correct time

By Arthur Wamanan

The UNP announced yesterday it will decide when to topple the government, and charged, the day was not too far away.

The UNP also said the government has forgotten to look after the working community and the President has so far not looked into their welfare.

Addressing a UNP media briefing yesterday Kurunegala District MP Johnston Fernando said President Mahinda Rajapakse who was the Labour Minister under former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, was aware of the issues faced by the working community in the country.

"It has been nearly two years since the present government came into power and nothing has been done for the welfare of the working community. The government is corrupt and is continuing with its corrupt acts. President Mahinda Rajapakse is a former labour minister. Now he appoints ministers. He is in a better position to help the working community," he said.

He further said the UNP will topple the government at the appropriate time.

"The President is unable to control his brothers and his ministers. They are playing havoc out in the open. The UNP will decide when to topple the government. The time has come for the government to go," he said.

"The Defence Secretary recently stated that they would go for negotiations after defeating the LTTE militarily. What is the point in negotiations after defeating them militarily? This has in fact affected the country as the US has stopped giving us military assistance," he added.
