Dr. A.T. AriyaratneTML – The Founder/President, Sarvodaya Movement, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne was recently honoured by the Governor of Michigan, USA and two leading American universities in recognition of his life-long services to humanity.

Dr. Ariyaratne has been recognised as an Honorary Fellow of the University of Bridgeport at a ceremony held at Arnold Bernhard Centre last month. The James Madison University of Virginia has also honoured Dr. Ariyaratne with the presentation of the IBAVI Award for 2007 at a ceremony held on October 18 at the Grafton-Stovall Theatre of the University Campus. An introductory announcement identified Dr. Ariyaratne as "a global leader and visionary teacher who has dedicated his life to non-violent transformation of societies" and referred to Sarvodaya as "a community based movement inspired by Gandhian thoughts and Buddhist traditions which aspires to awaken all through sharing of labour, thoughts and resources and that all Sarvodaya initiatives are based upon the spiritual foundations of love, compassion and welfare and rely on local resources and village empowerment to solve community problems."

Dr. Ariyaratne has won international recognition in the past including the King Baudouin Award, Gandhi and Nivano Peace Prizes, the Magsaysay and the Hubert H. Humphrey Awards and the Sushil Kumar International Peace Award.
